bees

Bees are very busy creatures, responsible for the majority of the food we harvest every day. Interested in owning your own beehive? We’re now offering all-inclusive residential and commercial beekeeping services. See below for package details.

Become a Beekeeper

What is included in our beekeeping package and services?

  • If you’re interested in becoming a first-time beekeeper, we have a great package for you. Our all-inclusive beekeeping services include delivery, installation, management, and harvesting of your hives. You only need about as much space as the equipment itself. This is about 1.5 ft. x 3 ft., with some room around that for me to work the hive.
  • Each beehive package contains all necessary components: 1 bottom board, 3 boxes, 24 frames, 1 inner cover, and 1 outer cover. We also provide weighted support on the top and cinderblocks to raise the beehive off the ground.
  • Our experts will make routine visits to your hive to ensure beehive health and wellness. These visits average once a month but may vary slightly depending on hive condition, time of year, and other factors. You will be notified a few days before our hive wellness visits.
  • During the hive wellness visits, we look for symptoms of bacterial, fungal, and viral diseases, and all pests. We will act on swarm prevention, disease management, feedings (if necessary), and adding or removing equipment as needed to accommodate the seasonal variance in colony size. This will includes the removal of excess honey frames. Routine updates will be sent to clients after each visit, regarding the status of the hive, the strength of the colony, and any disease or issue that may have been found. We treat bees with medicines, probiotics, and organic pest control methods, and make supplemental visits as needed at no additional fees.
  • Nearing the winter season, we will assist in the winterization of your hive through the cold months. During these coldest months the visits to your hive will decrease because the hives must remain sealed in the winter.
  • We hand-assemble frames using high-quality pine and an all-natural wax foundation. Beehive boxes are sent into the field with a varnished exterior, and a flat roof with a galvanized aluminum casing. Laura’s Raw Honey does not use plastic parts or any synthetic materials or chemicals in our equipment.
  • If, for any reason, you decide you want to discontinue our services (and you are paid in full), we will leave you with all of the equipment and bees that we have delivered and we will discontinue the  routine hive checks.

How much will it cost for beekeeping services?

  • Full residential beekeeping services plus the cost of the hive itself is $3,000 per hive for the first year. A $1,500 non-refundable deposit.
  • Should you want the hive installed on a rooftop, balcony, or rigged to mount on extremely uneven ground there will be an additional fee of $575.
  • The cost for routine servicing of the hives for the first year is included in the initial fee.
  • After the first year, the cost for our servicing of the hive or hives will be $2,700 per year per hive.
  • The price will vary depending on the hive count ordered. A two-year commitment is recommended for optimal bee health and hive development.
  • Our beekeeping services are currently offered in and around Rochester, NY, and Buffalo, NY areas.

What if something happens to my hive?

  • A guarantee of live, healthy honeybees is included in this full-service package. This covers both the replacement of your queen, were she to die or become sick, along with the replacement of your entire colony.
  • Hive deaths do occur due to a myriad of diseases, Colony Collapse Disorder, and pesticides. Should this happen, Laura’s Raw Honey will replace your bees as soon as bees are available. Laura’s Raw Honey cannot, of course, be held responsible for acts of nature that destroy your hive.

How much honey can I expect from my hive?

  • A typical healthy first-year hive tends to produce between 10lbs – 20lbs of harvestable honey. This number tends to grow with each year.
  • Honey harvesting can be done in a few different ways. You have the option of harvesting your own frames, in which case I will remove the frames from the hive and leave them in a safe place for you to harvest.
  • If you would rather Laura’s Raw Honey harvest the honey for you, there is a modest bottling fee of $475 per hive. We collect the frames and extract the honey, carefully ensuring your honey remains separate from others. We then bottle the honey and label the jars (with labels we provide) and deliver the finished jars of delicious honey back to you.
  • We also make sure to leave enough honey for the bees, of course.

Do you offer nucleus hives and how are they different?

  • Nucleus hives allow you to transfer bees into beehives and start their own colonies.
  • We offer a 5-frame nucleus hive for $195, which includes the required $100 deposit. The nucleus hives come with 3 frames of brood (baby bees), one laying Queen, all of her workers, and 2 frames of honey to feed the bees.
  • Nucleus hives can only carry 5 frames and do not include any supers (larger wooden bee boxes) or any other equipment for the next stage to transfer to the main hive such as inner covers, outer covers, queen excluders, etc. Other equipment can be purchased separately through us.
  • Our nucleus hives will be available starting in mid-June 2020
